The Division of Student Affairs prepares UTEP students toward high caliber leadership in today’s competitive workforce. Through our innovative and impactful programming, students are given the opportunity to sculpt essential skills toward their future professions.

The 21st Century Scholars Program is a highly-interactive, hands-on workshop with an emphasis on essential career-related leadership skills, to include: communicating in a professional setting, networking, self-promotion and working in a collaborative setting.  Students in the program represent the best of untapped, high-potential talent at UTEP and will participate in a day-long workshop on Wednesday, February 19th to include the following:

  • An introduction to case studies and a chance to practice related skills
  • Lunch with El Paso-area employers targeted at student majors
  • Facilitated group work with required outcomes
  • An opportunity for formal presentation to high-level campus leaders

The 150 UTEP students named as 21st Century Scholars are engaged in a day of programming to include:

  • Several opportunities to practice communication skills
  • A self-awareness exercise designed to help students re-define themselves as leaders
  • An introduction to case studies and a chance to practice those skills
  • Lunch with El Paso-area employers targeted at student majors
  • Facilitated group work with required outcomes
  • An opportunity for formal presentation to high-level campus leaders
  • The chance to contribute to UTEP’s Centennial Celebration planning

Following this day of programming, the Century Scholars are invited to participate in campus engagement activities and other career and leadership development programming including the opportunity to apply for fellowships at the state and national level.  Scholars are selected by Deans, faculty and staff on the basis of academic achievement, community engagement and ability to have a positive campus impact.
